More Info on the iPhone

The complete OS will be stored on the flash memory, but it takes up far less than 500 MB making it easier to install software or firmware updates. No iTunes downloads at this time, but don't rule it out because it may be added later. Cingular is most likely being a bitch about it. Sadly you will not be able to use iTunes songs as ring tones. Safari is said to include as many plugins as possible including Flash and Java (Awesome!).

AppleTV to Require iTunes 7.1

It was listed under the AppleTV Specs online but has now changed to just 7. However, along with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later and Win XP SP2, you'll find iTunes 7.1. Since AppleTV will be released sometime next month, we can probably expect an iTunes upgrade as well.

iPhone Will Not Allow User Installable Applications

"The impression I got from the information coming out of the keynote was that the device would feature a full install of Mac OS X, and would run any and all desktop-based applications, as indicated by Apple asserting that the device "Runs OS X." You can imagine my surprise when while talking to the booth attendant I was informed that users will not actually be able to install any applications. This is a point of utter confusion with me. Why would Apple refer to the software running on the device as "OS X," when in reality, it will be running the long rumored stripped-down version of the operating system."

Gallery: iPhone Size Comparisons

Size comparisons between the iPhone, 30GB iPod, Nano, and SLVR.

Apple iPhone

The iPhone has finaly been announced today. Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the sensor when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quadband GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode, no word on standby time yet. The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June.

Apple TV

Well now we know that iTV has officially become Apple TV. It's real folks: we got 802.11 b/g AND 802.11n, USB 2.0, Ethernet, WiFi, HDMI, bunch of standard outs, plus a 40GB hard drive all powered by an Intel CPU. So resolution is only 720p (FUCK) so looks like a few folks are gonna be out of luck. Five computers can connect to the Apple TV box, making a true hub for all your PCs. You can watch content stored on your rig and you can also pull streaming video directly off the web. Plus, the box will even grab content from PCs outside of your house. You'll be able to grab one immediately for $299.

Sling Media's New SlingCatcher

Not only will it allow you to view content from your Slingbox like you can with your PC, but it also will allow you to view whatever is on your PC, on your TV. The box is about half the size of a Slingbox Tuner and includes S-Video, Component, HDMI and USB. It also includes a hard drive that will allow you to eventually buy content from Sling. Also, the device doesn't include WiFi, but it is capable, making it the first Sling product with wireless connectivity.

WMP Firefox Plug-In for Windows Vista

If you have Windows Vista and your running Firefox, you may have noticed that you cannot download the missing plug-in for embedded Windows Media. Microsoft doesn't even offer the plug-in for Vista, however, you can download npdsplay.dll, npwmsdrm.dll, and npdrmv2.dll and manually place them into your "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins" folder.
