Google Pre-Launches New iPhone Interface

If you visit Google.com from an iPhone, you now get a menu of services to choose from - home (search box), Gmail, Calendar, Reader and More (docs, sms, goog-411, news, photos, blogger and notebook). It’s basically all of the core Google services, accessible from a single easy to use menu. Accessing the site through other mobile devices continues to deliver the old Google Mobile interface. Today we are happy to tell you about a new feature we've started to roll out which will enable you to sign into your AIM account and chat with your AIM buddies right inside Gmail. When you log in to AIM through Gmail chat, your AOL buddies will appear in your chat list with friends from your Google Talk network, and you will see the yellow "running man" logo to the right of your AIM friends' screen names. To your AIM friends it will look like you are logged in to AIM as usual.

Vista SP1 Kills the WGA Kill Switch

Microsoft's anti-piracy system known (and loathed) as Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is set to lose its bite. When Vista SP1 launches in early 2008, WGA will still identify -- ad-nauseam -- what it thinks to be non-legal copies of Vista. However, it will lose its ability to disable said systems. The change was announced in a presentation by WGA senior product manger, Alex Kochis, who said, "Based on customer feedback, we will not reduce user functionality on systems determined to be non-genuine." That should bring a swift end to WGA customer complaints related to false-positives, spyware concerns, or server glitches.

Digg Images and New Categories Launched

• New Universal Taxonomy
  Now you can submit news, images, or videos to any category on Digg! Categories will be consistent across the board, which means you can view all media types in a given topic, or view one media type at a time (e.g., only images under the “sports” category). We’re also excited to support the launch with new categories. “Offbeat” will be its own category, with new topics, and we’re adding a whole new “Lifestyle” category with topics like Autos, Food & Drink, and Travel. As always, if you don’t want to see a particular topic or media type on Digg, you can click the customize button in the navigation to filter your view.
• New Images Crawler
  Submitting images to Digg is basically the same as submitting news and videos, with a few notable differences. When you submit a link to a web page containing multiple images, Digg will crawl the page and present up to ten image thumbnails from that page for you to choose the one you want. We’ve also added this technology to news submissions.
• Sorting and Duplicate Image Detection
  We’ve added a new sort to the images section called “mosaic” view – it’s great for browsing image thumbnails. To help prevent people from submitting duplicate images, we’ve added image recognition technology from Idée Inc.

A German research published in New England Journal of Medicine and Weekly World News said that men staring at women's breasts in fact prolong their lives with years. "Just 10 minutes of staring at the charms of a well-endowed female such as Baywatch actress Pamela Lee is equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics work-out," said author Dr. Karen Weatherby, a gerontologist.

uTorrent WebUI For The iPhone

The iPhone UI for uTorrent can be used to access uTorrent from your iPhone when you’re away from your computer. The interface is optimized for the iPhone and uses the regular uTorrent WebUI. At the moment the iPhone UI lets you pause, resume and add new torrents. The iPhone UI also shows some status info such as the download/upload speed and the number of seeds and peers connected to the torrent, which should be sufficient to track the progress of your downloads.

Gmail Adds Group Chat and Emoticons

Group chat has finally found its way to gmail’s instant messaging system. So right there while you have your email inbox open, you can chat with multiple people at one time. Start a group chat by clicking on the Options link at the bottom of a conversation window. You’ll now see “Group Chat” as a new option. Once that’s selected, just type in the name of the person you’d like to add to your current conversation.

Vista SP1 public beta to hit in December?

Speed boost or no, all of you clamoring for some hot Vista SP1 action will be able to get a beta-style fix in December, according to ZDNet. Apparently "selected testers" will get a release candidate in the first week of the month, with general availability to come the week after. ZDNet says the current SP1 build being tested is 17051, but it's not clear whether that's the version to be released or not. Like all things SP1, looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

Google Reader Adds Recommendations & Drag-and-Drop Folders

Google Reader has made two improvements to its interface, one Web 2.0-ish and the other pretty darn useful. The change Reader users will really appreciate is the ability to simply grab newly-added feeds and place them in their folders—no more clicking through menu bars, which really helps when doing multi-feed updates. The other new addition is recommendations, which can be found in the "Discover" link and points you to feeds based on your current list, your search history and your location. As you can see, Reader probably knows you better than you'd think.

The Pirate Bay has a new feature: click on an audio torrent and (in some cases) you’ll get an option to view “detailed artist info”, which brings a neat list of albums and songs by that artist, a tag cloud of related artists, and an embedded Last.FM radio widget which lets you listen to the artist right on the spot.

Google Experimenting With Digg Style Voting On Search Results

This experiment lets you influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results. When you search for the same keywords again, you’ll continue to see those changes. If you later want to revert your changes, you can undo any modifications you’ve made. At the moment the results of the program will only be stored per user and not applied to the general search index, so that sites buried (”I don’t like”) will not appear in future results for the user, where as sites voted up will stay up. Google Labs notes that “this is an experimental feature and may be available for only a few weeks.”

Google Mobile Maps Updates

Google Maps has added some new ways for you to find your way using your mobile device. You’ve now got contacts integration and GPS functionality on Windows Mobile, for version 2003 or higher. There’s also GPS-Enabled Google Maps for the rest of us to use, as well as an optimized version for your Treo and your Blackberry. And some stuff that’s been rolled out on the web version of Google Maps and Earth that’s now available on its mobile implementation: real-time traffic conditions, favorite places and routes, and additional details for businesses marked on your maps.

I got five words for you: Drag and Drop Netflix Queue. This app by Brent Jensen that supports multiple accounts, downloads thumbnails of movies, lists new and top 100 movies, also has a search function.

New Phone Features NES Emulator with Controller

This is the new Lenovo i909 cellphone, which has standard-issue features like a 2.4-inch TFT display, 2-megapixel camera, microSD memory card slot, mp3 and video player. But it also has an NES emulator on board, and it comes with a controller that snaps on to the phone to make it a little Game-Boy-like device. It is, in a word, badass. The bad news? It's headed to China and only to China.

iPhone Users Can Now Drop Data Plan

For those of you who keep your iPhone connected via WiFi entirely more often than through EDGE, listen up. As of now, it appears that iPhone users can login to their AT&T myAccount page, surf on over to the "Add / Manage Features" section and opt out of the (previously required) monthly data plan. Making the change will save you a whole $20 per month -- or $240 per year, if you prefer that perspective. Granted, you'll also lose visual voicemail in the process, but at least you're now being presented the option, right?

YouTube HD Coming Soon

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen confirmed that YouTube was testing HD video but qualified the statement by stating that YouTube is primarily focused on providing content to everyone, which doesn’t necessarily facilitate a HD product. Chen spoke on the difficulties on providing a watchable HD product to many, including buffering times that don’t drive viewers away. Chen told CNet that the first High Quality content on YouTube should be available within 3 months.

Your Mission: Spread Firefox One Giant Sticker at a Time

Are you ready to infiltrate society and spread Firefox one sticker at a time? Operation Firefox is currently recruiting agents to place huge 3.5’ Firefox stickers where the world will see them. In addition to worldwide notoriety, you might wind up with a new MacBook Pro or a Nintendo Wii.

Operation Firefox began last summer as a project initiated by the Mozilla Marketing interns. We had seen what the Mozilla community produced before, including the New York Times ad, the Firefox crop circle, and the Firefox Flicks contest, and decided to step up to the challenge and create another opportunity for Mozilla fans to show off their creativity.

This newest campaign puts 3.5 foot Firefox stickers in the hands of our community and looks for creative new ways to share Firefox with the world. Ultimately, our goal is to get 50 great photos of the Firefox logo in situations that promote some of the defining characteristics of the Web browser–performance, security, customization, and community.

The contest is two-tiered: first, we’re putting out a call for the 50 best “placements” for these stickers (due November 9th). Then, the most creative agents will receive a fathead sticker to complete their mission: take a photograph and submit before December 3rd. All 50 photos will be displayed on the Operation Firefox website, but the four best ones will receive a new MacBook Pro or Nintendo Wii.

Iron Sink Media has managed to get a syndication deal with MySpace for the launch of its original web series, “Roommates.” There are 45 episodes in this series, and the first episode debuts Monday at 1:00 pm PST. Stephen Colbert Officially Announces Run for Presidency

After nearly a solid week of dropping hints, Stephen Colbert threw his hat in the ring in the race for president.

First, he made a surprise appearance at his old home, Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," Tuesday night to make an official announcement: He was officially considering a run for president and would announce his decision "some time soon."

Soon arrived about 20 minutes later on his own show, The Colbert Report, when, with balloons falling, he said, 'Yes, I'm doing it!" Then he welcomed CBS political analyst Jeff Greenfield to analyze his impact on the race "in the past three minutes."

Greenfield said it was "astounding."

Google Docs Mobile Now Available

Google launches Docs Mobile, a slimmed-down view of Google Docs and Spreadsheets for your handheld. At the top of the narrow page is a search box, followed by a list of recent documents with links to view (but not edit) spreadsheets and documents (presentations are not viewable.) You can also navigate folders, and move between rows and columns or to a particular cell in spreadsheet view.

Apple to Release iPhone SDK in February

Apple has just announced that it will be releasing an SDK for the iPhone in february allowing for third party application developement. The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod Touch.

"It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target."

iTunes Plus Price Drop Confirmed for Today or Tomorrow

Ars Technica first reported yesterday that Apple was ready to lower the price of iTunes Plus tracks from $1.29 for the DRM free music to $.99 which puts it in line with the pricing on the DRM laden tracks in the rest of the iTunes Store. Steve Jobs, and you can't get a better source than that, has confirmed with the Wall Street Journal that this will be happening either today or tomorrow. On Top of that iTunes Plus Now Offers Over Two Million Tracks.

Mario Kart Wii to Support 12 Player Online Racing

We finally have confirmation that the title will feature online play for up to 12 participants. While it isn't the 16-player support rumored some time ago, it's still something we're glad to see Nintendo do, considering that their support of their online service has been lukewarm at best. Hints were placed that a more streamlined process regarding finding racers and setting matches up would be utilized, but no word as of the time of this post regarding that.

New Harry Potter DVD to Come with PC and Portable Versions

At the DVD Forum conference in Universal City, CA, Warner Home Video announced that it will release the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD with a bit of extra content. The DVD will contain two additional versions of the latest installment in the Harry Potter series: one for viewing on a PC and another targeted for digital media players. Good move!

Windows Vista SP1 Looking Good, Due in Q1 '08

The first service pack for Windows Vista is on its way, and PC Magazine has a preview of an early private beta version. The good news is that reviewer Neil Randall found the service pack to be faster overall than the shipping version of Windows Vista, and also noticed more drivers available and improved encryption. Randall also experienced applications within Adobe Creative Suite CS2 running faster, dialog boxes popping up more rapidly, and other file copying speedups. This bodes well for the shipping version of SP1, which should be available along with Service Pack 3 of Windows XP (the last service pack for XP) in Q1 of 2008.

RIAA Wins 1st File-Sharing Case, Awarded $222,000

The first-ever RIAA file-sharing case to go to trial just wrapped, and sadly, the outcome isn't a positive one. Regardless of the incredibly asinine and consumer-hostile comments made by Sony BMG's head of litigation the other day, the jury found Jammie Thomas, a single mother from Minnesota, liable for willful copyright infringement and awarded the RIAA plaintiffs $222,000 -- that's $9,250 for each of the 24 songs she was alleged to have made available on Kazaa, for those of you keeping track at home, and probably something like, oh, say, $222,000 more than she should have had to pay, since the RIAA plaintiffs weren't required to show that Thomas had a file-sharing program installed on her machine or that she was even the person using the Kazaa account in question. Fuck that shit.

AIM 6.5 Released

The biggest new feature in AIM 6.5 is the Tunes Plugin, which allows you to stream music that your buddies have added to their playlist. Users are now able to leave a “status message” that is available regardless of whether or not the user is online. Then, users can see an aggregate view of their friend’s status messages. AIM also plans to soon add a feature called “AIM Profiles,” which will include social networking features and the ability to share photos. A few other features is the ability to see away messages right in the Buddy List window below the screen name and new black themes.

Fmail Brings Gmail to your Facebook

Fmail is a new Facebook app that lets you check your Gmail from your Facebook account. Built on Gmail Lite, all of your Gmail messages show up in an iFrame within your Facebook account. It’s somewhat interactive with Facebook, meaning there are tabs for your mailbox actions for this application, like access to your Inbox, starred items, spam folder, etc. There’s also a separate button for composing a new email message.
